People who happened to face the loss of a limb are faced with a battle that they can only put a band-aid on that never heals the wound. They have to face the fact that they lost a limb. Something that has been with them since they were born. There's a difference in gravity, with your body all of a sudden being lighter on one side. It's not the feeling of losing a lot of weight, that evens out throughout your whole body. But the feeling of losing a part of you. If you lose your leg or arm, you still feel it there mentally, when really it isn't. Then you are labeled as handicapped, meaning "not normal" to other people. Others think of the bright side of things, but then the other half go into a deep depression knowing they are different.
Miles O'Brian lost his arm in February, 2014, he speaks of his experiences and how he had to go through that stage of getting used to completely new things for a while. With being so used to having two arms, he fell one day mentally expecting both hands to protect him but he only has one, ending the day with a broken nose. He lost his limb when he was packing up TV equipment in Japan when a heavy pelican case of equipment fell on his forearm, later he went to the hospital and he had to choose between death or the loss of an arm. He was in denial for so long but then decided to write about his failures and accomplishments.
Believe it or not O'Brian never even told his children or girlfriend about the accident until one night he Skyped them and told them what happened. When he came home his girlfriend seemed to be the one worried most about it, relieved also. Running up to embrace one another and looking at the stump, still loving who he was.
The biggest part about losing a limb is the phantom feelings that you know aren't really there. Knowing you can't do everything that you want to. And coping through all of that denial or even depression. But Miles O'Brian coped with it quite well after a while, minus the fact that he had to learn how to do new things, he was alive and thankful.
